I, myself didnt believe it earlier.
But, after getting more evidence, more explanation, i realized it is logic and make sense.
Let me share with you how.
Have you ever imagine pieces of newspapers, the ones which had larger piece or smaller piece burnt out quickly?
Of course the one which had smaller pieces burnt out quicker, correct?
Now, we must understand the concept of fuel burning, or combustion.
Combustion or burning is the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between a fuel and an oxidant accompanied by the production of heat and conversion of chemical species.
In simple words :
Combustion of a liquid fuel in an oxidizing atmosphere actually happens in the gas phase. It is the vapor that burns, not the liquid. Therefore, a liquid will normally catch fire only above a certain temperature: its flash point. The flash point of a liquid fuel is the lowest temperature at which it can form an ignitable mix with air. It is also the minimum temperature at which there is enough evaporated fuel in the air to start combustion.
Now is when it gets interesting.
The main principle to have a complete burning is to have a perfect air flow.
How to ensure that?

Every car has an air filter, correct?
why? to ensure that the air to be burnt is free from any other particles. and also to ensure that the air is in smaller particles for easier burning (remember the newspaper story?)
